Khwaja Haider Ali Aatish
Khwaja Haider Ali Aatish was born in 1764. He was a great Urdu poet of Lucknow and one of the giants of Urdu literature. His family migrated from Delhi to Lucknow that’s why he is also known as “Lakhnawi”. Khwaja Haider Ali Aatish lived his life without any employment or government stipend. Khwaja Haider Ali Aatish and Imam Baksh Nasikh were contemporary poets of the era which was a golden time for Urdu poetry in Lucknow. Their rivalry is well-known. Khwaja Haider Ali Aatish is mostly known for his Ghazals, and for his astonishing and different style of poetry. ‘Kulliyat-e-Khwaja Haider Ali Atish’ and ‘Deewan-e-Aatish’ are his great masterpiece. Soon after the death of Imam Baksh Nasikh, Aatish stopped writing poetry. He died in 1846. A golden collection from his most famous Urdu Ghazals is being presented here for our readers. شبِ وصل تھی، چاندنی کا سماں تھا
کوئی عشق میں مجھ سا افزوں نہ نکلا
بیمار عشق رنج و محن سے نکل گیا
دیوانہ ہے دل یار! تیرے جلوہ گری کا
کوچہء دلبر میں مَیں، بلبل چمن میں مست ہے
رہتے ہیں ہم روز و شب کوچہء دلدار میں
ہوائے دورِ مئے خوشگوار راہ میں ہے
کام ہے شیشے سے ہم کو اور ساغر سے غرض
مس کیا عجب طلا اگر اکثیر سے ہوا
Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali
Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali was born in 1837. He was a great writer and famous Urdu poet. He is also known as Maulana Khawaja Hali. The Indian rebellion of 1857 was an armed revolt in British-India against the cruel and devastating British colonial rule, also remembered as the 'First War of Independence'. This was a turning point in his life because he was the eye-witness to that catastrophe. Maulana Hali drifted from job to job for many years, arriving lastly in Lahore, where he got the job of a personal servant of Chayanne Mehdi during the 1870s. During this period, he started composing his epic poem “Musaddas e-Madd o-Jazr e-Islam” at the request of Syed Ahmed Khan. Some of his great works include the biography of Ghalib (Yaadgar-e-Ghalib), the biography of Saadi Shirazi (Hayat-e-Saadi), the biography of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan (Hayat-e-Javed). A famous poem ‘Barkha Rut’ and a very popular Naat ‘Woh Nabiyon Mein Rahmat Laqab Paanay wala’ are his great masterpiece. He died on 30 September 1914. Maulana Hasrat Mohani
Maulana Hasrat Mohani was born on 14 October 1878 at Mohan (a town and a Nagar panchayat of Uttar Pradesh). He was a noted Urdu Poet and an Indian activist in the Indian independence movement. He devised a notable slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ انقلاب زندہ باد (Long live the revolution!) in 1921. His ancestors migrated from Nishapur (Iran). He championed the freedom struggle of India. Maulana Hasrat Mohani studied at Aligarh Muslim University, where Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar and Maulana Shaukat Ali were his classmates. Tasleem Lucknawi and Naseem Dehlvi were his teachers in poetry. A few of his great books include Kulliyat-e-Hasrat Mohani, Sharh-e-Kalam-e-Ghalib, Nukaat-e-Sukhan, Mushahidaat-e-Zindaan and a very popular Ghazal “Chupke Chupke Raat Din Aansoo Bahana Yaad Hai” sung by Ghulam Ali and ghazal king Jagjit Singh was written by him. چپکے چپکے رات دن آنسو بہانا یاد ہے
بھلاتا لاکھ ہوں لیکن برابر یاد آتے ہیں
وفا تجھ سے اے بے وفا چاہتا ہوں
ہم نے کس دن تیرے کوچے میں گزارا نہ کیا
حُسن بے پرواہ کو خودبین و خود آرا کر دیا
وہ چپ ہو گئے مجھ سے کیا کہتے کہتے
عشق میں جان سے گزر جائیں
تجھ کو پاسِ وفا ذرا نہ ہوا
تجھ سے گرویدہ اک زمانہ رہا

Jigar Moradabadi
Ali Sikandar, pen-name ‘Jigar Moradabadi’ was born on 6th April 1890. He was a great Urdu poet and a famous ghazal writer. He was awarded literary honor (Sahitya Akademi Award) in 1958 for his good poetry collection ‘Atish-e-Gul’. He was the second poet (after Allama Muhammad Iqbal) who was awarded an honorary degree “D.Litt” (Doctor of Letters, considered to be equal to Ph.D. in some countries) by Aligarh Muslim University. He got oriental education in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu in Moradabad, after that he started to work as a traveling salesman. He died on 9th September 1960 at the age of 70 years. He belonged to the classical ghazal poetry. Some of his great masterpieces are being presented here for our readers.
